Preview of the Joint Meeting of the
12th National Symposium of the Association of Healing Healthcare Projects and the
3rd National Gathering of the Fetzer Institute Relationship-Centered Care Network

October 22-25, 2003 SUNRIVER RESORT - Sunriver, Oregon

The purpose of this gathering is to draw on experience at both individual and institutional levels to create a set of principles for relationship-centered care and a set of practices that help move the principles to sustained action. It will address leadership practices required to integrate personal and institutional transformation. Neither is sustainable alone.

The unique aspect of this gathering is the joining of commitments between our organizations and our members. The Association has met to share successful institutional [organizational] projects, and the Network has fostered personal transformation and reclaiming of humanity among individual practitioners. There is an essential meeting place between relationship-centered care practitioners and the institutions in which they work.

In short, this gathering is about the interior and institutional leadership needed for healthcare today. By combining efforts, we can create an expanded set of connections among people and institutions for the ongoing work of leading healthcare in positive directions. We will invite nationally recognized speakers.

Objectives and Method

  1. To convene healthcare professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, administrators, students, consumers of healthcare, long-term care providers, etc.) who care about the importance of relationship in care and who want to transform healthcare institutions.
  2. To identify relationship-centered and healing healthcare principles we hold, harvest actions that flow from those principles, and discover what it takes to sustain the principles, passion, and spirit.
  3. To create a product beyond the conference such as publications or videos to document the learnings of these two national efforts to humanize healthcare. These products will be available to renew the conference for participants and extend the conference experience to those who did not attend.
  4. To create an event that attracts media attention-most likely PBS-so that the word about relationship-centered care goes out beyond our immediate circles.
  5. To create commitment to the work among institutions and practitioners.
  6. The planning has already begun for this joint gathering. Anyone who attended the 11th National Symposium of the AHHCP in Hawaii, as well as all people on the AHHCP and RCC Network mailing lists, will be sent information about the joint meeting in 2003. Additional information, as available, will be posted on the AHHCP Web site.
