Symposium Overview 2002
Mai ka piko o ke po'o a ka poli o ka wawae, a la'a ma na kihi 'eha o ke kino" From the crown of the head to the soles of the feet, and the four corners of the body"
An expression used in Hawaiian prayers of healing. The four corners of the body are the shoulders and hips; between them are the vital organs of the body. ('Olelo No'eau: Hawaiian Proverbs and Poetical Sayings, Mary Kawena Pukui)
You are enthusiastically invited to the 11th National Symposium of the
Association of Healing Healthcare Projects to address the issues and
opportunities for Healing Healthcare as a practice and model for organizations
and communities preparing for the future. You are an important part of this
change, since much wisdom is found in those who are "doing the work." This is your opportunity to participate in bringing your experience, expertise, vision, and commitment to the healing of healthcare.
In addition to hearing from leaders in this field—Leland Kaiser, Jerry
Jampolsky and Diane Cirincione, Jeanne Achterberg, Dr. Noa Emmett Aluli, Herb
Yim, and others—this gathering will utilize "Open Space" technology, recognized internationally as an amazingly innovative approach to more productive and meaningful meetings. Open Space technology has been effectively used by groups large and small who share common goals and objectives to deal with highly conflicted and complex issues
The 11th Symposium of the Association of Healing Healthcare Projects is to
be a breakthrough event. The speakers and open space sessions will bring
compelling information and dialogue to the task of effectively practicing and
promoting the ethic of healing healthcare—healing ourselves, our relationships, and our communities—in our present work environments. This symposium is designed to provide you an opportunity to discuss what is important to you with those who have done similar work or who have resolved challenges now facing you and, also, be able to share your experience and knowledge with those who most need it.
Optimizing your time at the symposium, you will be able to move around and
among discussion groups investigating healing healthcare—its implementation and practice in the current healthcare environment. You can, if you like, set up your own discussion group based on your primary interest or area of expertise. To further your goals and objectives beyond the symposium, you will have access to a written summary of every Open Space session, which will be posted during the symposium and will be available on the AHHCP Web site. The symposium will support action planning in and beyond the meeting.
After being initially guided by Sam Magill, a pioneer in Open Space
technology, the sessions will be self-managed by the group, offering an
opportunity for matters important to participants to be discussed. Individual
and group interactions that take hold during an Open Space event epitomize what
is needed for effective organization now and into the next millennium.
Self-managed work teams, distributed leadership, empowerment, ongoing learning,
extraordinary levels of productivity, innovation, and even FUN all put in an
appearance.
The 11th AHHCP Symposium, "The Nature of Healing," is designed to encourage active learning in a superb, natural setting on the beautiful, healing island of Hawaii.
Goals and Objectives for the Symposium
- Learn how to identify the components of healing healthcare in the context of your own communities, work environments, and clinical practice.
- Answer the question, together with other healthcare professionals (using
Open Space Technology), "How do I effectively practice and make evident the ethic of healing healthcare—healing ourselves, our relationships, and our
communities—in my present work environment?"
- Review traditions and practices in the healing arts; and examine how they
can be implemented, together with current clinical protocols, as part of a
healing healthcare model.
- Understand the role of nature in the healing process and the nature of
healing in the practice of healing healthcare.
