What is the AHHA?
The AHHA mission is to inspire and support healthcare models that exemplify human caring and healing. We are a "virtual" organization, one that exists through the practices and commitments of its members, not through standard payments, membership cards, or other traditional organizational identification. This website, our virtual meeting place, is maintained by the board members of the Association of Healing Healthcare Advocates. We welcome ideas and contributions from you, the reader/visitor to this website.
Why the organizational name change?
The Association of Healing Healthcare Projects was founded in 1988 in Reno, NV. During its 15-year existence, its primary manifestation was embodied in annual/bi-annual symposiums, at which healthcare professionals shared their "projects" and the insights and networking inherent in the promotion of "healing healthcare". The most recent symposium was held in Bend, Oregon, in October, 2003. In wanting to adapt to the changes in healthcare that have transpired in the last few years, the board sees its role as functioning as advocates for healing healthcare in all aspects of our healthcare delivery system.
What is "healing healthcare"?
Healing healthcare is exemplified by its vision statement: "Healing ourselves, our relationships, our community." There is no universally agreed-upon definition, as its meanings and implications continue to evolve. Originally, "healing healthcare" was understood to be healthcare that heals as well as cures, a holistic approach to wellness that transcends standard conventional "treatments". Healing is a journey towards wholeness and is defined broadly in terms of body, mind, spirit, emotions, community, and personal empowerment. "Healing healthcare" consists of the meaning we bring to it through our individual and collective words and actions.
What is the purpose of this website?
This website is intended to function as a source of information, networking opportunities, and a bulletin board for its visitors. We are a community of individuals representing the wide diversity found in our healthcare systems. The web site offers a forum for sharing how healing healthcare is becoming real around the world. We invite you to share your projects, models, learning, and experiences in realizing the vision of healing healthcare. Let us share successful models and experiences of healing healthcare and our challenges around healing healthcare through the medium of this website.
