The Mission of Healing Journeys is to promote and support healing by
assisting people with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses to access
their own healing potential and their ability to thrive.
Dr. Lawrence LeShan said, “The person exists on many levels... physical,
psychological, and spiritual... and none of these can be reduced to any other.
To move successfully toward health, all must be treated.”
Healing Journeys produces a two-day event/conference entitled Cancer As a
Turning Point, From Surviving to Thriving. The purpose of the event is to
celebrate, empower, awaken, and network all whose lives have been touched by
cancer. Cancer, or any life-threatening illness, can be viewed as both a curse
and a blessing. If viewed simply as a disease of the body, it is experienced
only as a curse. The conference helps one view cancer in the context of the
whole person (body, mind, emotions, and spirit) and see its transformative
potential as an awakening for the soul and spirit.
Conference objectives include rediscovering the healing capacity of the human
spirit, facilitating healing from within as an essential component of total
health, experiencing the physical and emotional benefits of group support, and
facilitating networking among people with common cancer experiences and
concerns.
The program includes speakers (often well-known authors), performers, vocal
and instrumental music, drama, art, healing stories, and networking time. Each
conference is a variety and balance of inspiration, humor, music, creative
expression, and practical information.
We offer this conference at no charge to participants annually in different
locations in Northern California. We are planning a conference in Seattle for
July 12-13, 2003. In addition, we will do our annual Northern California
conference at the Marin Civic Center on September 13-14, 2003.
It is difficult to describe our event since it is so different from what
people usually think of as a conference. Some people say it feels like a family
reunion. Evaluation forms consistently say the conference is life-changing,
life affirming, inspiring, and informative. Many say it has changed the way
they regard their cancer and life in general; cancer survivors and family
members feel equally supported and connect with others who experience similar
challenges.
Some comments about what attendees liked most about the conference are: “The
energy and love that are so strong in the room. Great permission to just be and
enjoy.” “The blend of presenters—very much part of the community of people
attending.” “The sense of hope, renewal which all speakers brought.” “The
reestablishment of hope, joy, and faith about the whole cancer/healing
experience.” “The variety of presentations; the mix of spiritual, medical,
musical, and humorous presentation is the beauty of what you do.”
